Common Questions About ConcepSys

Show all answers Hide all answers
Cost
What is the expected accuracy range of the cost estimates provided by ConcepSys?
ConcepSys provides a feasibility estimate, AACEI Class 3, with an expected accuracy range of +25% to -25%. It is a factored estimate enhanced by the 3D layout, hydraulic calculations, and preliminary equipment sizing features of ConcepSys. More information about the AACEI cost estimate classification system can be found in Recommended Practice 18R-97 of the American Association of Cost Engineers International (AACEI).
What are the sources of the equipment cost data used in your estimates?
ConcepSys uses the Richardson estimate database as provided by Cost Data Online Inc.
Can the ConcepSys cost estimate value be overriden with a budgetary quote?
Yes, the user can override the ConcepSys estimated value for equipment and pipe materials in the estimate paramters tab of the object properties panel displayed when an item is selected in ConcepSys.
Can I change the discipline factors (multipliers) used in ConcepSys to generate the estimate?
Yes, ConcepSys allows you to change the discipline factors (multipliers) on both individual equipment basis as well as for the whole project.
Datasheet Formats
What templates and formats are used for equipment and process data sheets in ConcepSys?
ConcepSys uses a simple process datasheet format for the critical design parameters that impact the early feasibility estimate. ConcepSys Web version does not allow creation of mechanical design datasheets. ConcepSys Enterprise version enables use of either Process Industry Practices (PIP), other technical society (API, ISA), or a company's custom datasheet formats. Please contact support@concepsyssolutions.com to discuss options for how you can use your preferred mechanical (detail) design datasheets in ConcepSys.
Deliverables
What front-end loading design deliverables are generated automatically via ConcepSys?
ConcepSys automatically generates and updates the following documents as the project design is developed:
  • Project Flowsheet
  • Equipment Location Plan
  • Equipment and Line Location Plan
  • Electrical Area Classification Plan
  • Major Equipment List
  • Line List
  • Instrument List
  • Itemized Cost Report
  • Total Cost Report
  • Process Data Sheets
  • Mechanical (detail) Data Sheets (ConcepSys Enterprise version only)
Equipment and Unit Operations
My project design requires an equipment or unit operation not available in ConcepSys. Can I still use ConcepSys?
Yes. Additional equipment types can be added to ConcepSys Web upon request. Please contact support@concepsyssolution.com to discuss your specific project need.
How are packaged units handled i.e. refrigeration, compressors, fired heaters?
Packaged units can be represented by a block graphic in the flowsheet. Vendor flowsheets can be superimposed on the block graphic to show packaged unit detail. Cubes are used to model package units in the 3D model.
Existing Information
Can existing equipment location plans, geometries, and elevations be imported into ConcepSysTM?
Existing equipment location (plot) plans can be imported into ConcepSys as an overlay for the ground level surface in the 3D model. Existing geometries from 3D models such as PDS, PDMS, and Smart Plant can not be imported into ConcepSys at this time. However, ConcepSys does allow easy addition of equivalent geometry to indicate existing equipment and locate tie-points. Please view the how-to video on importing existing equipment for more information.
Pipe Specifications
How does ConcepSys handle pipe specifications (material and thickness schedules for each diameter)?
ConcepSys has two built-in pipe specifications based on the standard schedule (schedule 40 where applicable) for carbon steel and stainless steel pipes. All versions of ConcepSys also allow entry of custom pipe specifications specifying the material and thickness schedule for various diameters. If ConcepSys has pricing for the particular diameter, material, and thickness, it will automatically use it for estimating. Otherwise, a price estimate will be needed along of the custom pipe specification. ConcepSys Enterprise version provides access to Process Industry Practices (PIP) pipe specifications as well as pre-loading of client company specifications.
Simulation Data Import
Can you import simulation models from a process simulation software into ConcepySys?
Yes, simulation model data from CHEMCAD can be imported into ConcepSys. Please contact us at support@concepsyssolutions.com if you want to import simulation data from other simulation software.
Software Technology
Is ConcepSys based on a database system such as Oracle or MS Access?
ConcepSys is not based on a database system. It has been developed using the faster, more robust object oriented programming platform. The object oriented platform makes ConcepSys significantly easier to install and use comapred to software which is based on database systems.
